Using a healthy homemade sauce, this chicken recipe is perfect for game day or Sunday dinner. Not just for wings, this can be used on other cuts too.
As much as I like to give myself credit for being Superwoman, the truth is, there are days that even I wanna give up…on food preparation. I’ve said it before, the key to healthy slow cooker recipes is all in the sauce. Homemade sauce. While occasionally I will use a store-bought packet, for the most part I try to stay away from them. Why? 2 words: high sodium. Store-bought packets are different from store-bought or online spices. You can find some great spices, especially online these days. One of my favorite spice brands these days is The Spice Cave. Specifically, their WIND seasoning. It’s the star of this recipe. I love WIND because it’s healthy being paleo and whole 30 approved. It contains herbs like rosemary & oregano, garlic, onion and other spices.
While I used chicken wings, as I mentioned, you can use this recipe on any cut of chicken. It also works well with pork. An optional step that I like to do prior to putting my wings in the slow cooker is to broil them. You can also broil them afterwards. I like broil beforehand because I find it helps the wings hold their shape while they cook so they’re less likely to fall apart when you take them out of the slow cooker. As you can see from the pics, they’re still nice & crisp. You can of course broil them afterwards if you like.
- 2 lbs chicken wings
- 2 tbsp The Spice Cave's WIND seasoning
- ¼ cup low-sodium chicken broth
- 3 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- Optional step: broil chicken wings under broiler 5-7 minutes or until slightly browned.
- Add wings the bottom of the slow cooker.
- In a small bowl, mix together sauce ingredients.
- Pour sauce over wings.
- Cook HIGH 1-2 hours or LOW 2-4.
