Slow cooker apples honey bread challah pudding is the perfect addition to your Rosh Hashanah menu…or anytime! Free up your oven & make this easy bread pudding in your slow cooker.
This recipe combines 3 foods traditionally eaten on Rosh Hashanah: challah bread, apples & honey. Apples being a sweet, symbolic fruit with the honey signifying hope for a ‘sweet’ new year.
What Is Challah Bread?
Challah is a loaf of braided bread made with eggs, water, flour, yeast and salt. It’s popular bread in Jewish cuisine and is usually eaten on ceremonial occasions such as Shabbat and major Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashanah. While you can absolutely make your own challah bread…I did not. I never have. I’m not baker so I buy my challah bread from the local grocery store. French bread or brioche are good substitute for challah bread if you don’t have access to store-bought challah or don’t want to make your own.
Use the apple that you prefer; I used gala apples. It really doesn’t matter what type of apple you use whether it be a sweet apple like gala or red delicious or a bitter apple like granny smith. I never bother to take the skin off my apples when cooking them in the slow cooker. You can if you want to but I find that it’s not necessary because the slow cooker cooks the apples to the point that the skin is very soft. I used 100% all-natural unsweetened applesauce but the type of applesauce you want to use is up to you.

Tips For A Successful Bread Pudding
There are a few things you need to do to make this bread pudding a good one:
Generously grease the slow cooker with cooking spray or line with parchment paper. If you don’t, this is definitely a recipe that will stick to the slow cooker when you go to take it out.
Let the bread pudding cool before removing it from the slow cooker. This too will help it from sticking to the sides. If you use parchment paper, you don’t have to worry about this step, you can just pull the bread pudding out.
This isn’t a recipe you can leave on the warm setting too long because it will burn the bottom of the bread pudding. When it’s done cooking, it’s best to turn the slow cooker off and let it cool.
Drizzle some more honey on top of the bread pudding before serving.
The sliced apple you see on top of the bread pudding in my pictures is purely cosmetic. If you want to add it, great. If not, that’s okay too! I used my 3.5 quart slow cooker for this recipe. Serving a larger crowd? Double the recipe and use a 6-quart.
Spray slow cooker generously with cooking spray. Add torn challah bread pieces. Top with diced apple.
In a medium size bowl, mix together eggs, vanilla, honey, cinnamon, unsweetened applesauce, cream and milk. Pour the mixture over bread making sure all the pieces are wet. Gently pat down the wet bread mixture so the top is an even surface.
Cook HIGH 2-4, LOW 4-6 hours or until knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

You’ll know this is done when a knife is inserted into the center and it comes out clean. This slow cooker bread pudding can be eaten, room temperature, warmed, or even cold out the frig.

Hanks! My fiancé is an amazing cook but me, not so much! I made this today for dinner so he didn’t have to cook. It was great! Easy enough for this inexperienced cook and tasty enough for his experienced taste buds! I added A super reduced balasmic on top since we use it for Caprese salad and it baked onto The chicken really well. This recipe is a keeper! Any idea for a balsamic Like sauce to go with it?
