Holiday Side Dishes
What Are Sweet Potatoes?
Originally from Central & South America, sweet potatoes are found in cuisines worldwide. They come in a variety of shapes and colors – purple, white, orange, red, yellow, etc. Sweet potatoes are not only healthy, they are often referred to a superfood because they’re full of nutrients. Sweet potatoes are high in fiber and vitamins like vitamin A which helps to keep your immune system healthy.
What Sweetener To Use
My go-to sweetener of choice for this sweet potatoes recipe is maple syrup. It’s vegan and paleo compliant. Other suggestions include honey (not vegan), or a sugar like coconut sugar or brown sugar.
FAQs & Tips
- Skin on or off – Sweet potato skin is edible so you can leave the skin on or peel it. If you leave the skin on, the sweet potatoes will hold their shape better during the cook time.
- Cut into uniform pieces – Cut your sweet potatoes into uniform chunks so they cook evenly. Don’t chop them too small! If you cut your sweet potatoes too small, there is a chance they will overcook and turn to mush on you. If this happens, the sweet potatoes will taste good but it won’t necessarily look like what you’re expecting.
- I use a 3.5-quart Crock-Pot Casserole Crock Slow Cooker or 6-quart Instant Pot to make this recipe.
