Air fryer pigs in a blanket are a fun finger food that will please almost any crowd. Using a homemade honey mustard sauce, there are only 4 ingredients in this easy appetizer. No air fryer? No problem you can also bake these in the oven.

What Are Pigs In A Blanket?

Pigs in a blanket or a variation of it are eaten around the world. It’s an easy concept – sausages wrapped in some sort of bread and cooked. These air fryer pigs in a blanket are based on the popular American version where cocktail sausages are wrapped in crescent rolls and cooked.

What Is An Air Fryer?

The name air fryer is a little bit confusing, because when you cook food in your air fryer you aren’t actually frying it. An air fryer cooks your food by circulating hot air around the food at a very high-speed, cooking the food and producing a crispy ‘fried’ layer. This is called convection so your air fryer is actually a small countertop convection oven. An air fryer can help you cook your food faster while still getting a nice baked or fried texture on the outside, all with a very small amount of oil. Air fryers come in a variety of different sizes and styles. I use a 5.8-quart air fryer and I still had to cook my pigs in a blanket in 2 batches.

What Type Of Sausage To Use

You will want to use cocktail sausages for this air fryer pigs in a blanket recipe. Cocktail sausages are small, smoked sausages. You may know them as cocktail weenies, cocktail weiners, or by Lit’l Smokies which are probably the most popular brand of cocktail sausages. Cocktail sausages come fully cooked.

What Type of Rolls To Use

You can use your preferred brand of crescent rolls for the recipe whether they be a name brand or a generic brand. If you want to make your own crescent dough, by all means do so. I used store-bought. Each of the 8 pre-cut crescent triangles are cut into 3 long pieces. This is why you only need a package of 8 crescent rolls & 24 cocktail sausages for the recipe.

Honey Mustard

To me the star of this recipe is the honey mustard that’s spread on the rolls before cooking and then used as a dipping sauce after. Honey mustard is a 2-ingredients combo that packs a lot of punch. I like to use Dijon mustard but other mustards work well too. I find that cutting the crescent rolls and then spreading the layer of honey mustard on top is easier than doing it afterwards but do what works for you. Or omit it all together, you don’t have to add it to the pigs in a blanket.

Make Ahead & Freezer Instructions

One of the best things about this air fryer pigs in a blanket recipe is that they can be made ahead and even reheated directly from frozen.

Make Ahead: Place the prepared but uncooked pigs in a blanket on a ungreased baking sheet. Cover the sheet with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerate for up to 3 hours before cooking.

Freeze: It’s best to cook the pigs in a blanket and then freeze them. Once cooked & cooled, place the pigs in a blanket in a freezer bag and store in the freezer for up to 4 weeks.

Reheat: No need to thaw! Cook these pigs in a blanket directly from frozen regardless of whether you’re using your air fryer or oven. Place the frozen pigs in a blanket on an ungreased baking sheet and air fry or bake according to the instructions in the recipe box. You may need to add on an additional minute or two to the cook time but not much more than that.

Tips For Successful Pigs In A Blanket

  • Only spread a thin layer of sauce on the crescent rolls before cooking. Otherwise you run the risk of the rolls being soggy on the bottom.
  • Every air fryer is different. Yours might take 8 minutes to cook to your liking or more than 12. Mine took 12 minutes total (6 minutes on each side).
  • If your pigs  in a blanket aren’t done after 12 minutes, continue to cook them until they are but do not raise the temperature.
  • Feel free to substitute maple syrup for the honey.

I used a 5.8-quart air fryer for this recipe.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 8 ounces refrigerated crescent rolls (8 count)
  • 24 cocktail-size smoked link sausages (approximately 14 ounces)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons honey (or maple syrup)
Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup honey

Instructions

Prepare The Pigs In A Blanket

  1. Unroll the crescent roll dough and the pre-cut triangles. Cut each of the 8 triangles into 3 long pieces.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard and 1 1/2 teaspoons honey. Spread the mixture over the cut crescent rolls in a thin layer.
  3. Place a sausage on the largest end of a strip of a cut crescent roll. Roll up the sausage until all the dough is wrapped. Repeat with until all the sausages & crescent rolls are used.

Air Fryer

  1. Add parchment paper to the basket of the air fryer or spray lightly with cooking spray. Add half of the prepared pigs in a blanket to the air fryer. Make sure they are not touching and there is enough room for the crescent rolls to expand. You may need to do this in more than 2 batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  2. Cook at 320 degrees for 8-12 minutes, flipping the pigs in a blanket halfway through cooking.

Bake

  1. Heat oven to 375°F. Place the prepared pigs in a blanket on an ungreased baking sheet.
  2. Bake for 14-18 minutes or until pigs in a blanket are crisp to your liking.

Notes

I cooked mine in the air fryer for 12 minutes total, flipping at the 6 minute mark.
