Ingredients For Air Fryer Marinated Shrimp

  • Shrimp: This recipe uses 1 pound of peeled and deveined shrimp. Large or jumbo shrimp work best because they are easier to handle and less likely to overcook quickly. If using frozen shrimp, thaw them completely and pat them dry before adding them to the marinade.
  • Oil Of Your Choice: Oil helps coat the shrimp and keeps them from drying out in the air fryer. Extra-virgin olive oil adds flavor, but avocado oil or another neutral oil can also be used.
  • Low-Sodium Soy Sauce or Coconut Aminos: Low-sodium soy sauce adds savory, salty flavor to the marinade. Coconut aminos can be used as a soy-free alternative and will give the shrimp a slightly sweeter, less salty flavor.
  • Red Wine Vinegar: Red wine vinegar adds acidity and helps brighten the marinade. It balances the richness of the oil and the saltiness of the soy sauce or coconut aminos.
  • Lemon Juice: Lemon juice adds fresh citrus flavor that pairs well with shrimp. It also helps brighten the entire dish. Fresh lemon juice is best if you have it.
  • Garlic: Fresh minced garlic adds savory flavor to the marinade. Since shrimp cook quickly, one clove is enough to add flavor without overpowering the recipe.
  • Dried Oregano: Dried oregano adds herb flavor and gives the shrimp a Mediterranean-style taste. It pairs well with the garlic, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, and olive oil.
  • Salt & Pepper: A pinch of salt and pepper enhances the overall flavor. Since soy sauce and coconut aminos already add saltiness, you only need a small amount.

FAQs & Tips

What size shrimp should you use?

Use large or jumbo shrimp if possible. Smaller shrimp will cook faster and may need less time.

How long should the shrimp marinate?

Do not marinate the shrimp too long. Since the marinade contains vinegar and lemon juice, up to 30 minutes is enough.

Can you use a different marinade?

Of course. If you don’t want to use the marinade I provide in the recipe box, substitute your favorite marinade for the shrimp.

Can you use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce?

Yes. Coconut aminos is a good soy-free, gluten-free alternative. They are usually slightly sweeter and less salty than soy sauce.

Can you use a different vinegar?

Sure. Apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar can be used in place of red wine vinegar, but the flavor will be slightly different.

Can you make this spicy?

Yes. Add crushed red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, Cajun seasoning, or hot sauce to the marinade if you want a spicy version.

Can you make this without oil?

The oil helps keep the shrimp moist and helps carry the flavor of the marinade. You can reduce the oil, but I do not recommend omitting it completely.

Can you use skewers?

You can. If you use wooden skewers, be sure to soak them in water beforehand for 10 to 15 minutes. This will help prevent them from burning.

Can you double the recipe?

Yup. Double the ingredients, but cook the shrimp in batches so the air fryer basket is not overcrowded.

Can you cook this a different way?

Don’t have an air fryer yet? That’s okay. You can also grill or broil the shrimp in the oven.

  • GRILL: Set grill to medium heat. Add shrimp skewers to the grill. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until shrimp are pink and opaque.
  • BROIL: Preheat the broiler. Spray a sheet pan with cooking spray. Place the shrimp skewers on the pan in a single layer and broil for 2-3 minutes on each side or until shrimp are pink and opaque.

How do you store this?

Store leftover marinated shrimp in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
