  • 2 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch or arrow root starch
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt (or more)
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • For serving: 2 cups cooked mashed potatoes

Instructions

Slow Cooker

  1. Add the broth, starch, thyme, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper to the slow cooker. Whisk until well blended & there are no lumps.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausages and cook until they are evenly browned on each side approximately 3 to 5 min.
  3. Add sausages to the slow cooker along with the onion. Stir to mix well.
  4. Cook on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours or LOW 4 to 6.

Instant Pot

  1. Turn on the Instant Pot to the high sauté setting. Add the oil and the sausages & cook until they are evenly browned on each side, approximately 3 to 5 min.
  2. Add sausage and brown on each side, 3-5 minutes. Remove sausage from IP. You may have to brown the sausages in batches.
  3. Add onion and sauté for a few minutes until soft.
  4. Add the beef broth, and using a wooden spoon, scrape the bottom of the Instant Pot to remove any bits that stuck to it. Make sure you scrape it well to avoid burning during cooking. Add the starch, thyme, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper to the slow cooker. Whisk until well blended & there are no lumps.
  5. Add sausages back into the Instant Pot.
  6. Close and seal vent. Select high pressure and set time for 5 minutes. When cooking time is done, quick-release the pressure.
