This slow cooker soul food soup combines good luck soul food with traditional soup ingredients. Pork, black-eyed peas, greens…this soul food soup is the perfect recipe to start the new year off on the right foot.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound pork loin, cut into 2-inch pieces, seasoned generously with salt & pepper
  • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 large celery stalk, sliced
  • 1 medium-size carrot, peeled & diced
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 15-ounces black eyed peas, drained & rinsed
  • 1 cup greens, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for the Instant Pot)

Instructions

Slow Cooker

  1. Season the pork generously with salt & pepper. Add the pork to the slow cooker with all the other ingredients. Stir to mix well.
  2. Cook HIGH 2-3 hours or LOW 4-6.

Instant Pot

  1. Turn on the Instant Pot and select sauté. Once hot, add the oil to the pot. Add onion, celery, and carrots and cook for a 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the garlic and an additional minute. Turn off the Instant Pot.
  2. Add the broth and water and deglaze the bottom of the pressure cooker by scraping all the bits off with a wooden spoon.
  3. Season the pork generously with salt & pepper. Add the pork to the pot along with in the black-eyed peas, greens, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, thyme, pepper, and hot sauce (if using).
  4. Close lid and seal valve. Set high pressure and cook set time for 20 minutes. Natural release for 10 minutes then quick-release pressure for remaining time.

Notes

If needed, add more salt & pepper to the bowl before serving.
