What Is Charoset

Charoset is a symbolic food on the Passover Seder plate. It’s a mixture of fruit & nuts symbolizing the the mortar that the Jews used when building for the Egyptian pharaohs’. There are tons of charoset recipes out there; it’s one of those recipes where everyone has their own version. That’s one of the things I love about it, you can really make it your own.

A Healthy Charoset

I made this charoset a couple of years ago while I was doing a round of whole30 and I have been making it ever since. To keep this charoset paleo and whole30 compliant, I did not use any wine or sugar-loaded juice. Instead, I  sweetened the charoset by using a combination of chopped dates and a splash of all-natural 100% grape or apple juice. I prefer to use 100% grape juice but that’s just me.

What Type Of Apples To Use

You can use your preferred apple but I like a sweeter apple like red delicious or gala. What you see here in the pics are red delicious apples. Some people peel their apples when making charoset but I like to leave the skin on mine. For one, the skin is where most of the nutrients are in apples but the real I don’t peel my apples is because I’m usually too lazy.

Hand Chop Or Food Process

Sometimes I hand chop the ingredients, sometimes I add all the ingredients to a food processor and grind them up that way. You might be able to tell this from the pictures.  Whether you chop or grind the charoset is up to you.

Serving & Storing Charoset

Charoset is a great recipe to make ahead of time. I actually try to make it at least a day ahead of serving to allow the flavors to really meld together. Store charoset covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
