Slow Cooker BBQ Shredded Beef

Slow cooker BBQ shredded beef is an easy crockpot recipe that produces tender, saucy, versatile beef. This fuss-free dish only uses a few ingredients: beef roast, a homemade BBQ rub, and your favorite BBQ sauce. Sit back and let the slow cooker do all the heavy lifting. Pile the shredded BBQ beef buns, serving plated with your favorite sides, or even over greens for a healthy salad. Instructions to make this BBQ shredded beef in the Instant Pot are also included.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef roast
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons BBQ Rub (see below for homemade mix)
Homemade BBQ Rub
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt (or more)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

Prepare the beef:

  1. In a small bowl, mix together all the homemade BBQ rub seasonings until blended. Season the beef evenly all over with all of the seasoning blend.

Slow Cooker

  1. Add the beef broth  to the slow cooker. Add prepared beef to the bottom of the slow cooker. Pour BBQ sauce on top.
  2. Cook HIGH 4-5 hours or LOW 8-10.
  3. Remove beef from the slow cooker and shred. Place shredded beef back into the slow cooker until ready to serve.

Instant Pot

  1. Pour the broth to the Instant Pot. Add the prepared beef. Pour the BBQ sauce on top of the beef.
  2. Close lid and seal valve. Set high pressure and cook for 45 minutes  When the cook time is done, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes then quick release any remaining pressure.
  3. Remove beef from the Instant Pot and shred. Place shredded beef back into the Instant Pot until ready to serve.
