Why Do We Eat Certain Foods On New Years?

Greens

Symbolism of wealth and financial prosperity

The most common reason for eating greens on New Year’s Day is because they are green and resembles money. Leafy greens like collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, kale, or spinach all have physical characteristics similar to money: they can all be folded, stacked in a pile, and of course they are green in color. Eating greens is viewed as a symbolic act of inviting financial abundance, steady income, and economic stability in the year ahead. Many households believe that, more greens you eat, the more prosperity you will receive.

Black-Eyed Peas

Symbolism of coins and luck

Black-eyed peas are usually associated with coins because their small, round shape resembles coins, and the dark “eye” on each pea is is a symbol of watchfulness or protection. Eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day invites good luck, opportunity, and financial gain. Some people eat black-eyed peas not just on New Year’s Day, but also the day after to symbolize that the luck will be ongoing throughout the year.

Pork

Root forward & prosperity

Eating pork is associated with moving forward. Rooting is a behavior of all pig breeds. They use their snouts to root forward while digging in search of food. This makes pork a symbol of progress or advancement in the new year. Eating pork on New Year’s Day means that the year will moves forward, not backwards. If you do not eat pork, can you substitute chicken? Technically you can however chickens scratch backwards which could lead to setbacks.

Cornbread

Gold & wealth

Cooked cornbread is a golden, the same color as gold. Its golden color symbolizes wealth, while corn itself reflects basic nourishment, and that small efforts throughout the year can yield great returns. Serving cornbread is also meant to invite gold into the home.
