How To Make Crockpot Chipotle Mashed Sweet Potatoes
- Add all ingredients to the slow cooker. Stir to mix well.
- Cook on high for 2 to 3 hours or LOW 4 to 6 hours.
- Let the sweet potatoes cool slightly. Transfer to a medium size bowl or mash directly in the slow cooker. Mash potatoes using preferred method (potato masher, hand mixer, etc). Add more milk if needed.
- Leave the sweet potatoes whole and unpeeled for the Instant Pot
- Pour 1 cup of water into the Instant pot and add the trivet. Place the sweet potatoes on the trivet.
- Close lid and seal valve. Set high pressure and cook for 15 minutes. When cooking time is complete, quick release the pressure.
- Stir in the chipotle pepper and maple syrup. Transfer to a medium size bowl or mash directly in the Instant Pot. Mash potatoes using preferred method (potato masher, hand mixer, etc). Add more milk if needed.
FAQs & Tips
How many chipotles in adobe should you use?
If you like more heat, I do not recommend adding another actual chili but rather, add more of the adobo sauce. Be careful though, this gets spicy very fast. If you end up add too much heat, add sweetener to balance it out.
How sweet is this?
I don’t find it to be too sweet but that’s just me. If you are worried about this, start with a tablespoon or two of maple syrup and go from there. Or omit it all together.
Do you have to use maple syrup or honey?
Nope. You can also substitute sugar or brown sugar.
Is this vegan?
It can be. Use maple syrup (honey is not vegan) and a nut milk like almond milk and this sweet potato side is vegan! I usually make a vegan version.
What consistency should you mash this to?
Mash the chipotle sweet potatoes to your desired consistency. The sweet potatoes will be so tender when they are done cooking that they will mash easily with a fork. For a smoother mash, use a potato masher, food processor or blender.

Store leftover slow cooker chipotle mashed sweet potatoes in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
