It’s still summertime! Grab your favorite fruit and make homemade jam. The best part about this jam is that is only uses 3 ingredients: fruit of your choice, chia seeds, and dates for a natural sweetener. Yup, there’s no added sugar AND it’s both whole30 and paleo! You can of course substitute honey or maple syrup in place of the dates.

I’ve been jamming away all summer – apricot, strawberry, peach, blueberry. Pretty much whatever fruit I find on sale turns into this week’s homemade jam. Some fruits obviously work better than others. Berries are great for example (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries) but melons (watermelon, cantaloupe) not so much. You can find which fruits are good for jams here.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fruit, chopped

  • 3-4 dates, chopped or 2 tsp honey

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to the slow cooker.
  2. Stir to mix well.
  3. Cook HIGH 1-2 hours or LOW 2-3. You’ll know it’s done when the fruit and dates are soft.
  4. Using an immersion blender, potato masher or even a spoon, mash the jam until it’s your desired consistency.
  5. Add jam to a container with a lid (mason jar preferred). Cool and store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

I know you’ll be tempted to add liquid. Don’t. Once the fruit starts to cook down, you’ll see it’s not needed.

Peach jam after it’s done cooking. NO LIQUID ADDED!

Your jam will thicken overnight so keep that in mind as well.

Hi, I’m a home cook from Los Angeles. I received a slow cooker as a wedding gift in 2011, but it wasn’t until six months later, facing my highest weight and hypertension, that I started using it. 1. Can this jam be canned in a water bath and will it mess up the consistency if lemon juice is added?

  2. I want to try this with Carrie mangos. They are already extra sweet. My question is, what are the chia seeds for.

  3. I will likely be giving the recipe 5 stars once I make it. I am right now in my search stage. Good idea to make in slow-cooker. I will myself add 1/10th the usual conventional sugar. Initial plan is to try frozen fruit as an experiment.

Live alone, and would not consume this in two weeks…I need a watch bath recipe…can I use this one.?

I made this recipe last night. It tastes great! It was super easy. It would be nice to have some guidelines on when to have 2 tablespoons of chia seeds and when to use 3 tablespoons.

Just some things to consider when making this:

    1. You can feel the chia seeds. I was hoping my son would eat this, but he is picky with textures. He won’t eat raspberry jam because of the seeds. Next time, I think I’m going to try grinding chia seeds.

    2. I I used nectarines and left the skins on which made the Jam at dark muddy color. It’s still tasted great, but for my picky son it might be a problem.

    3. I used a rice cooker that doubles as a slow cooker which means I have to take off the lid to see how everything is cooking. I cooked everything for the two hours on high. I would recommend using a slow cooker with a glass lid so you can check on it without lifting the lid. Perhaps the color would have been better had I cooked it less.

I am definitely going to try this recipe again! My tart cherries are almost ripe. I may use honey because I want to get that pretty cherry color. Either way I’m confident it will taste great.

  7. I haven’t seen chia seeds in a jam recipe before (not that I’ve looked at tons of recipes). What do the chia seeds do? Are they necessary? How would the jam compare with or without them? Just curious. Might try your recipe. Thanks very much! Merry Christmas!

    1. The chia seeds are used as a thickening agent in this case, there not for taste. You can definitely omit it but it might be a little watery. I hope you try it. Merry Christmas to you as well!

Have you tried canning these type of jams in a hot water bath? I would like to give them a Mother’s day gifts but would need them to be canned.

  8. My family would love this! I can’t wait to try a few of these. Fall is on its way and I’m excited to put my crock pot to use all the time.

  9. Making jam is so easy and fun. I make several different kinds of jams every year. Strawberry, grape, peach, blueberry and raspberry I make every year because we grow them on our farm.

This is going on my list of things to do this school year with my son. This looks great.

  11. I’ve been wanting to make my own jam for a long time but was always discouraged at how complicated it looked and the weird ingredients you need to add. This doesn’t look complicated at all! I’d prolly do peaches first 🙂

  12. Hmmm…I wonder if you’d be able to can this? You haven’t happened to test the ph balance of any of these would you? I always figure…if I’m going to make a batch of jam, might as well make a BIG batch and can some presents out of it.

  13. OMG! I didn’t know i could make my own jam in a slow cooker! I’m a big fan of slow cooker recipes at the moment (since it’s winter this end) SO this recipe is gonna be tried either this or next week. Love it!!! Thanks for sharing.

  14. What a great idea! I’m pinning this for later. I never thought to make fruit jam in the crock pot. And it has dates! I love using dates to sweeten.

  15. I’m seriously gonna pin this to make it later! I’ve been eating with limited sugar lately, so it’s nice to find a recipe for one of my favorite morning treats that only has three ingredients and no added sugar!!! 🙂

  16. This is awesome! I JUST told my husband last week I needed to find a recipe for jam because we keep doing PYO fruit! Fabulous! Pinning it for later this week when we do peaches!

  17. These look so good! I think I’m going to try either the strawberry or blueberry or both. I like that there’s no sugar added. Fruits are already naturally sweet.
