FAQs & Tips
How to Make Gravy in the Slow Cooker
The best part about this recipe is that the homemade gravy cooks directly in the slow cooker alongside the turkey—no saucepan or additional cooking step is needed! Before adding the turkey, pour the chicken broth & gravy seasonings into the slow cooker and whisk in the cornstarch until it is completely dissolved and no lumps remain. Add the seasoned turkey breast and let it slow cook. As the turkey cooks, its flavorful juices combine with the broth and cornstarch to create a homemade gravy. When the turkey is done, transfer it to a cutting board and let it rest before slicing. Whisk the gravy remaining in the slow cooker until smooth, then taste and adjust the seasonings as needed. Serve the warm gravy over the sliced turkey.
How can you fix thin or thick gravy?
After removing the cooked turkey breast, whisk the gravy well before evaluating its consistency. If the gravy is too thin, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and whisk until it’s well blended. Cover and cook on HIGH for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, or until thickened. If the gravy is too thick, whisk in additional chicken or turkey broth, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency. Keep in mind that the gravy will continue to thicken slightly as it cools, so let it rest for a few minutes before making substantial adjustments.
Can you make this without the gravy?
Yes. The gravy is optional, and you can prepare the boneless turkey breast without it. Simply omit the cornstarch and the gravy seasonings. I also suggest lowering the chicken broth amount to 1 cup.
What is a boneless turkey breast?
A boneless turkey breast is the breast portion of the turkey with the bone removed. This usually weighs between 2 to 3 pounds.
Can you cook the turkey from frozen?
If you use the slow cooker, the turkey breast needs to be thawed first. With the Instant Pot, you can cook this from frozen but you will need to add additional cooking time. This will vary depending on the size of your turkey.
Should you remove the string from the turkey?
Your boneless turkey breast will most likely come wrapped in twine. Whether or not you remove this before cooking is up to you. As you can see, I remove the butcher’s string before cooking.
How should you serve this?
I like to serve this boneless turkey breast with gravy over mashed potatoes (or mashed cauliflower) with sides like green beans. The sky is the limit!
How do you store leftovers?
Store leftover slow cooker boneless turkey breast with gravy in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
What size slow cooker did I use?
I use a 3.5-quart slow cooker for this recipe. Feeding a larger crowd? Double the recipe and use a larger slow cooker.

A little too pepper, don’t know if I messed up how much pepper in turkey seasoning. Next time will leave pepper out of turkey seasoning. Gravy was excellent.
Will make again
Could you use the frozen butterball turkey that comes in the box for this?
While I have not tried it, it should work just fine as long as you thaw the turkey first. Let me know how it turns out!
Excellent!
Can you cook carrots, potatoes, or other vegetables in the slow cooker at the same time, the way you can with a beef roast?
Absolutely. Fantastic addition!
I was nervous making a turkey recipe before thanksgiving without trying it first. I did a small test run with a 2 pound butterball turkey that I found on sale. This came out great. No gravy but I will make that on the side. I will use this for Thanksgiving since it’s just me, husband, and son.
Correct, no gravy with this recipe. I’m so glad you enjoyed it otherwise!
Very good. Light and easy. I started thawing this turkey as soon as I saw you posted this recipe. My family enjoyed it! My only complaint is that there isn’t any gravy. I had to make my own. I will definitely make this again!
This recipe has been updated to include gravy!
