How To Make Steak And Potatoes In The Crockpot

Prepare The Steaks

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the salt, rosemary or thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper. Season each steak evenly on each side with the seasoning mixture. Press the seasonings into the steak with your hand.

Slow Cooker

  1. Spray the slow cooker with cooking spray. Add the prepared steaks. Add the potatoes on top of the meat. Pour the broth on top of all the food in the slow cooker.
  2. Cook HIGH 2-3 hours or LOW 4-6.

Instant Pot

  1. Turn the Instant Pot to sauté. Once hot, add the oil and the prepared steaks. Cook 2-3 minutes on each side or until the steaks are browned. You may need to cook your steaks one at a time, depending on the size of your Instant Pot. Remove the steaks and set aside. Drain excess grease from the pot if needed. Turn the Instant Pot off.
  2. Pour in 1 cup broth and deglaze the bottom of the pressure cooker by scraping all the bits off with a wooden spoon.
  3. Add the potatoes to the pot. Add the trivet on top of the potatoes. Place the steaks on the trivet.
  4. Close and seal vent. Select high pressure and set time for 5 minutes. When cooking time is complete, quick release the pressure.

What Type Of Steak To Use?

Like a lot of my recipes, you can use your preferred cut of meat with this recipe however some cuts work better than others. Since this is a slow cooker steak recipe, do not bother with an expensive cut like filet mignon. It is too tender and will cook too fast.

What Type Of Potatoes To Use

I like russet potatoes for this recipe so that is what you see in the pictures. Waxy potatoes like red potatoes also work well because they hold their shape during the long cooking process. If you use a potato like russet or sweet potatoes I suggest you chop them into chunks. This will help them not turn to mush.

FAQs & Tips

  • Jazz this recipe up by adding other ingredients like onions and mushrooms. To do so, place them on top of the potatoes before cooking.
  • The Instant Pot requires 1 cup of liquid to properly pressurize. You can use beef broth or water. If you do not have a trivet for your Instant Pot, place the steaks directly on top of the potatoes
  • The end result of the steak is that of a slow cooker roast.
  • This crockpot steak and potatoes recipe is Whole30 compatible! To make it paleo-friendly, substitute sweet potatoes.
  • I used a  6-quart slow cooker or Instant Pot for this recipe.

Thank you it is so good, also added fresh mushrooms. This is a keeper. Looked just like the picture and tasted so good.

  2. Hi! I’m following your directions – potatoes and onions on bottom and steak and mushrooms on top – but after about an hour, there doesn’t seem to be enough liquid in here…
