FAQs & Tips

What are “bangers”?

“Bangers” is a British term for sausages. The name bangers comes from the sausages themselves. During times of food shortages, sausages were made with added water which caused them to burst or bang when cooked. Today’s sausages don’t do this but the name stuck. Traditionally this dish features pork sausages, but these days there are plenty of variations using different types of sausages.

What is bangers & mash?

Bangers and mash is a classic British comfort food with sausages (bangers) that you serve over mashed potatoes (mash) and top with an onion gravy. It’s a simple yet hearty dish that’s been a staple in the UK for generations and often served in pubs.

What type of sausages (bangers) should you use?

My sausages were uncooked. When I make this in the slow cooker, I pre-browned them in a skillet first. This is an optional step. If you’re using an (Instant Pot), this step is listed as an instruction since you can do it directly in the base.

Are there any healthy sausages out there?

There are tons! For a list of additive-free sausage brands, click HERE.

How do you serve this?

Traditionally, bangers and mash is served with peas on the side but technically you can serve this however you like!

How do you store leftovers?

Store leftover crockpot bangers & mash in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

What size slow cooker did you use?

I use small 3.5-quart slow cooker. Feeding a larger crowd? Double the recipe and use a larger 6-quart!

  6. This is one of my favourite meals to have … bangers and mash with homemade gravy. Mmmmm! Definitely a hearty dish to have especially at this time of year. I actually don’t own a slow cooker and didn’t realise how many tasty meals you can make with it. What a good idea to use mashed cauliflower and an alternative to potato. Might try it this week!
